The Library at school serves as an agency of service that supports the schools’ objectives and offers materials for all subjects and all students and teachers. The library at school can be a resource that supports the curriculum of the school, and its offerings, services, and development is geared towards assisting schools’ programs (Kinnel, 1994).
Libraries are generally able to fulfill their primary function acquiring information, processing, storing and disseminating the information. The schools are not an exception. The library of the school plays an essential role to play in the information service. They are able to provide material that meets the needs of the curriculum of everyone with the school community. The importance of providing such materials cannot be understated if schools’ libraries are to act as a facilitator of and aid to resource-based learning at the school.
In addition, with regard to information skills, the library and its librarians, provide available resources and services of different varieties to allow both students and school communities to use these skills in finding the information they need.
The purpose and philosophy of school library service are rapidly being recognized and accepted by teachers and administrators of schools. The fact necessitates that the librarian of the school be fully aware of the objectives of the library such as guidelines, the reading program and the enrichment program for students and teachers. However, Albert Academy library has no trained and qualified librarian who can comprehend and carry out these functions to ensure that the quality of service is completed.
Albert Academy School Library
The Albert Academy was inaugurated on the 4th October 1904. It was only in 1975 that they decided that Albert Academy Alumni Association in their meeting decided that such a reputable institution should not be without a library since the development of library facilities at schools was at its peak at the time. A concept to construct libraries was born in collaboration with the alumni association and the owners of the school which is now that of the United Methodist Church. The library was established in order to create the possibility for students to discover innovative concepts to improve their education and entertainment as well.
The library was officially opened to the whole students by the school’s principal, His Excellency the late Dr. Siaka P. Stevens on 4th October 1976, who was then the as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and also a member of the Albert Academy Alumni Association class of 1922. It was named in honor of his immense contribution that he made to the creation of this library to serve the entire school community. The Albert Academy Library has a purpose of “Support school curriculum activities by providing materials of relevance in the school process and to introduce new and improved information sources to help make the school to be in line with modern standards of education.”
The objectives of the Albert Academy school library are as they are:
I. To provide pupils with the library resources and services which are the most suitable and beneficial in their growth and development;
II. Participate fully in school programmes as they are able to meet the requirements of students teachers, parents, and other community members;
II. to motivate and guide pupils throughout their reading so that they will experience an increase in enjoyment and satisfaction; and also improve their the ability to judge and appreciate;
iv. to make available the latest developments and keep students abreast of contemporary trends in education. reader’s needs and keeping students well-informed to create a highly dynamic educational environment;
•. Work with the teacher to select and produce of educational resources that are compatible with the aims of the curriculum, offer guidance in the use of assessment, collection and evaluation of educational programmes and materials, facilitates the location, organisation and maintenance of the materials and
vi. Help students become proficient users of libraries and audio-visual and printed materials.
Library Provision at Albert Academy School Library
The main function of the service of information provided by modern school library is the provision of resources appropriate to the curriculum needs of pupils and teachers. Recently, the activities of the curriculum have been elevated to a new level, and the school , as a supportive resource of this change, must endeavor to house a variety of non-print and printed materials and be able to connect to online sources of information which also form part of the information resources available in the library.
Due to the demands of the new school curriculum, the school library must have a diverse collection of print and non-print materials and be connected, whenever is feasible, to online sources of information. Albert Academy School Albert Academy School provides printed books, novels, and non-fiction. They also have pamphlets, newspapers, chart pictures, monographs manuals as well as textbooks, handbooks as well as other reference books. library also offers non-books resources which include audio and audio-visual materials, slides, tape-slides, video cassettes, and CD ROM’s. Although they aren’t material that are considered to be books, in their traditional meaning, they still constitute resources for use by students and teachers. Electronic sources allow schools to provide pupils and teachers with a concept of an School Information Centre which is not extended to the school, but serves as the link to an endless amount of information (Herring, 1988).).
